Grange Primary School Kilkeel

Caring for Our Coast & Protecting Marine Species for the Future

9th Jun 2026

Today we were unable to carry out the planned beach clean at Cranfield with Primary 6 & 7 due to the weather conditions.  However, we were very fortunate to welcome Dr Gavin Grant, AONB and Geopark Marine and Coastal Engagement Officer with NMDDC, who visited our school to deliver engaging workshops with our Primary 5, 6 & 7 pupils.

The children learned about the incredible variety of marine life along our coastline, including many protected species, and gained a deeper understanding of how human behaviour can impact their survival. They explored the ways pollution, littering and everyday actions can harm marine habitats, as well as what they can do to make a positive difference.

We are extremely grateful to Gavin for sharing his time, knowledge and expertise with us.  We are lucky to live beside such a rich and diverse marine environment, and it is vital that our children understand the importance of protecting marine species and become more aware of how their actions can help safeguard these vulnerable ecosystems for the future.
