Primary 3 & 4 Explore How Animals Stay Warm in the Polar Regions
As part of their World Around Us topic on Polar Regions, the boys and girls in Primary 3 and Primary 4 took part in a hands‑on science investigation to discover how animals stay warm in such icy environments.
The children learned that many polar animals—such as seals, whales and polar bears—have a thick layer of blubber under their skin. This special layer helps to insulate their bodies and keep them warm, even when they are surrounded by freezing temperatures.
To test how blubber works, the pupils carried out an experiment. They placed one hand inside a bag filled with lard to represent “blubber,” and dipped it into ice‑cold water. At the same time, they dipped their other hand—without the layer of lard—into the icy water too.
They were amazed to discover the difference! The hand inside the “blubber glove” stayed warm and comfortable, while the other hand quickly felt the cold.
This simple but effective investigation helped the children understand how animals survive in the polar regions, and it certainly brought lots of excitement and a few giggles to the classroom.
Well done, Primary 3 and 4, for your super scientific thinking!
