Grange Primary School Kilkeel

Cross-Border project, part 2

30th Mar 2023

There was much anticipation and excitement in school this morning as Primary 6/7 awaited the arrival of Sixth Class from Scoil Naomh Mhuire, Muchgrange, Boher.
The children had a catch-up at snack time, after which it was time to meet our special guest, past pupil of our school, former Carlingford Lough pilot and attendant of Haulbowline Lighthouse, Mr Sean Cunningham.
Mr Cunningham shared some of his knowledge and the many experiences he has had on the Lough with the children who asked very insightful questions on the topic.  The children learned about the Connemara and Retriever Disaster in 1916, Haulbowline Lighthouse and life on Carlingford Lough.

Everyone then left school on a bus and travelled to Cranfield and Greencastle to view the sights they’d learned about earlier in the morning.  The weather wasn’t in our favour and the children were unable to get off the bus.

Back at school it was time for lunch and fun outside which was followed by the P6/7 tin whistle group and Aoife providing musical entertainment.  The children just had time to create a picture of Haulbowline using chalk or pastels before our friends from Muchgrange departed.

It was another super day and we are most grateful to the committee in Greenore making the visit possible.  Thank you to Mr Cunningham for sharing his time and knowledge with us.  Thank you to Mr McCrink and his class for coming to visit.  We thoroughly enjoyed your company.
