Grange meet Muchgrange

28th Mar 2023

Our Primary 6/7 class had a great experience on the first of their cross-border meetings.

This morning they travelled to Scoil Naomh Mhuire, Muchgrange, Boher, Co Louth where they met Sixth Class with whom they would spend the day. The children travelled together on a tour of the Cooley Peninsula viewing the Finnegan homestead, descendants of President Joe Biden, and coming as close to Haulbowline Lighthouse as possible in Co Louth.
They visited Greenore Co-Op and gathered in the assembly room where they watched a video about the rise and fall of the steam railways in Ireland and learned about the history that connects us across the lough, including a reenactment of passengers waiting to board the ill-fated Connemara in November 1916.  The children visited the model railway, had lunch with their new friends, sang and took a walking tour of Greenore before heading back to Muchgrange where they enjoyed playing football with the Mourne mountains and Greencastle as the backdrop.
It was then time for the short trip over to see Hanlon’s Machinery collection - a personal collection of vintage tractors, implements and even a Pope Mobile, before heading back to Grange.

We are most grateful to Brian Larkin and the committee in Greenore for funding our outing today and making us so welcome in their facilities.  Thank you to Mr McCrink, Principal of Scoil Naomh Mhuire, for welcoming us to his school and arranging the visit to Hanlon’s.

We look forward to Thursday when we welcome visitors from Muchgrange to Grange.
