Hearts of Mourne
5th Jun 2026
Today marked the end of our ’Hearts of Mourne‘ programme with our final visit to Slieve Roe House.
It was a lovely occasion as the children spent time with the residents for one last catch-up, learning more about the jobs they had done throughout their lives, following up on conversations from previous visits and singing a song together. The children presented handmade thank-you cards as a token of appreciation and a reminder of the special friendships that have been formed.
There was a real sense of sadness among the children, residents, day care attendees and staff that our final visit had arrived. Throughout the year, these visits were eagerly anticipated by everyone involved. A wide range of topics and themes were explored, providing valuable learning experiences and creating many cherished memories.
It has been wonderful to watch our pupils engage in such meaningful conversations with the residents. The generation gap seemed to disappear before our eyes as friendships developed and stories were shared.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of Slieve Roe House and Donard Day Centre for making us feel so welcome on every visit. Their kindness and support have made this programme such a success.
The morning concluded with a celebratory trip to Mauds for ice cream, very kindly provided by Annie's family. We are extremely grateful for their generosity and for helping us end the programme on such a happy note.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in making ’Hearts of Mourne‘ such a special experience for our pupils
