Rain Cloud in a Jar

20th Nov 2025

As part of our World Around Us topic on water, the children in Primary 3 and 4 took part in an exciting hands‑on science activity: making a rain cloud in a jar. This simple but magical experiment helped the children see how rain is formed and why clouds sometimes become too full and release water.

We began by talking about real clouds in the sky—how they are made up of tiny droplets of water and how, when they get heavy enough, these droplets fall as rain. To help the children understand this idea, we created our own cloud using shaving foam on top of a jar filled with water.

The children carefully squeezed coloured water onto the foam “cloud.” As they watched closely, they noticed the colour begin to seep through the foam and fall into the water below—just like raindrops falling from the sky! This helped them observe how clouds hold moisture and eventually release it as rainfall.

The class loved predicting what would happen, watching for the first “raindrop,” and talking about where we see rain in our everyday lives. This experiment supported their understanding of the water cycle, encouraged scientific thinking, and sparked lots of curiosity about the world around them.
